Social Media Statistics of 2020

Social media marketing has been a huge part of marketers’ strategies in the year 2020. Daily life has turned upside down as a result of COVID-19, and many marketing experts and business owners are still trying to figure out how they are going to adapt to the new normals of society. However, what hasn’t slowed down in this hectic year is the use of social media.

If you’re not a heavy user of social media, you may be unaware of the power these platforms hold. These websites are for so much more than just sharing family photos and staying connected with old friends. Nowadays, you can leverage daily posting into real-world sales that elevate your business.

As a digital marketing company with 20 years of experience, our roots lie within search engine optimization, web design, and content writing, the three main ingredients of online advertising. However, as technology progresses, we change and adapt with the times, which is why we now consider ourselves social media experts who take full advantage of these additional tools.

In this blog, SERP Matrix breaks down some of the statistics surrounding social media usage in 2020.

Facebook

Perhaps the most surprising statistic related to Facebook is the fact that the platform’s popularity is dropping amongst young people. Statistics show that fewer teens are using Facebook. Compared to 71% of teenagers in 2015, today, only 51% of teenagers say they use Facebook as a social media platform. This could a byproduct of the rise of social media apps such as Snapchat and TikTok, two high-speed platforms that seem to be geared towards adolescents.

Though teenagers are using Facebook less, the platform is still extremely popular amongst adults. Over 90% of social media advertisers and strategists use Facebook ads on a regular basis. Countless small businesses and brands heavily depend on Facebook advertisements to reach new customers and sell more products.

Advertisers are also trying to understand Facebook’s new video tools in an attempt to parlay them into more marketing opportunities for their businesses and clients. In May of 2020, Facebook unveiled a plethora of new video tools to help members stay connected to one another. Facebook group calls that are held via WhatsApp have a higher capacity; now, 8 people can all be in a group call at once.

Twitter

Twitter is a social media platform that is considered essential to so many users. Many young adults go to Twitter to read the news, connect with like-minded individuals, keep up with their favorite celebrities, and find new hotspots in their hometown. According to Statista, Twitter has over 330 million monthly users, though usage among adults has dropped in recent years (22% today, compared to 24% in 2018).

Social media marketers should be aware of the marketing power that Twitter holds. Some advertisers make the mistake of only focusing their efforts on Facebook and Instagram, but Twitter may have a bevy of untapped potential. While you’re boosting your Facebook and Instagram ads, keep in mind that 53% of Twitter users claim to have purchased a product they first saw on Twitter.

Instagram

Since the launch of Instagram Stories, businesses are beginning to use this feature as another tool to engage with customers and followers. Currently, 60% of the businesses who use Instagram are using the interactive features of the app to conduct polls and notify their followers when new products have launched.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is widely regarded as the most “professional” social media platform. Voted the most trusted network in 2019 by Business Insider, LinkedIn provides individuals with a social media platform geared towards business, job acquisition, employment opportunity, and networking. The platform currently has nearly 700 million active users, and it is quickly turning into one of the primary resources for both job seekers and employers.

Facebook Live and Instagram Live are household names, and LinkedIn Live is growing in popularity. This feature has seen a 158% increase since February of 2020, and with COVID-19 continuing to plague the world, users are utilizing this feature to hold workshops, spread information, and stay connected to their fellow professionals.
